He Shou Wu, or prepared Polygonum Multiflorum root, has very low toxicity and has been safely used daily and over the long term for many centuries. However, some very rare potential side effects can occur such as loose stools and light abdominal pain/vomiting.

Note that we refer to He Shou Wu as the prepared root of Polygonum Multiflorum – prepared by cooking it in a black bean soup and then dried. Raw Polygonum Multiflorum is widely different in its actions and may create serious side effects.
